Sarah Heinrich

Sarah Heinrich

Sarah Heinrich was a one-and-done Doug Ducey appointment in 2015 to replace the outgoing veterinarian Brian Serbin, a man who was both Chair of the Arizona State Veterinary Medical Examining Board and the President of the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association. According to her Senate executive summary, she obtained her veterinary degree from Iowa State University and worked at an animal clinic in South Dakota before moving to Arizona. In Arizona she worked for several years at the Emergency Animal Clinic and then moved to the Ocotillo Animal Clinic. Along with the usual AzVMA and AVMA memberships she also listed a membership in the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society.

Heinrich has no obvious side-hustles based on a quick search of Arizona Corporation Commission records. The only item that comes up is Heinrich Veterinary Services LLC. It could simply be the name of the corporate entity she works through.

One wonders how Heinrich's name came to the top of Ducey's list for this particular position. One reason may be possible political connections. Chad Heinrich is a former Deputy Secretary of State for South Dakota who went on to work on public affairs with the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce and worked as a lobbyist with the University of Phoenix before launching Heinrich Public Affairs. He was profiled in a 2018 Arizona Capitol Times article, Chad Heinrich: How politics and policy are in the blood, which mentioned his launch of Heinrich LLC as a lobbying firm. Heinrich LLC shared the same residential address as Heinrich Veterinary Services LLC, and Chad mentions that he "currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife Sarah" on his site.

According to Heinrich's LinkedIn page, she also did a stint at Phoenix Veterinary Referral and Emergency for about two and a half years. According to the state veterinary board's license lookup, as of early 2023 Heinrich most recently worked at Banfield Pet Hospital #1120. It's inside a PetSmart.

Heinrich was one of the defendants in a well-known lawsuit brought by Celeste Kelly, Grace Granatelli, Stacey Kollman, and the Institute for Justice. The plaintiffs sued to protect their livelihoods after the vet board prohibited them from practicing horse massage without a veterinary medical license.
